Some aspirants
In a fierce battle on Friday, 21st July 2024, students of St. Joseph Senior High in Datano, Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, elected new student executives for the next academic year. This election was historically significant as it was the first time it was conducted through electronic voting.
The euphoria was high as students flocked to the ICT lab to cast their votes. IT staff were on standby to assist those who had difficulty navigating the process. The headmaster, Rev. Fr. Anthony Oppong, after inspecting the process, remarked, “I thought the process would be difficult, and I had doubts if my students could do it. But the process is so simple; I could do it myself if I were a student.”
A total of 64 students contested for 34 positions, including house leadership roles, with about 10 positions being contested unopposed. The positions of Senior Boy Prefect, Senior Boys Prefect Assistant, Senior Girls Prefect, and Senior Girls Prefect Assistant were among the most keenly contested. The school’s Election Director, Mr Enoch Asemiah praised the efficiency of the electronic voting system, stating, “This is very simple. It eliminates the need for printing ballot papers, manual verification, sorting, counting, and tallying of results. The system handles all those tasks automatically.” He also credited Sir Frank Agbevey of Sefwi Wiawso SHS for developing the software.
