Mr. Abanga Yakubu Alhassan Descends Heavily on Akufo Addo for the Relocation and Renaming of the Ameri Power Plant

Mr. Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, NDC National Vice Chairman

Mr. Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), descends heavily on Akufo Addo for the relocation and renaming of the Ameri Power Plant.  He criticised the NPP government for using dubious means to renegotiate the deal and inflate its costs. Drawing on the wisdom in Asante proverbs, Mr Abanga condemns the NPP’s alleged misappropriation, likening it to a breach of trust akin to stealing from one’s mother-in-law.

He highlights the exorbitant costs associated with the relocation of the power plant, urging for a thorough investigation into the matter. He also pointed to NPP’s lack of substantive projects in the Ashanti region, suggesting that, the attempts to rename the relocated plant are merely a facade to mask their deficiencies.

Mr. Abanga concluded that, the country needs a concrete solution to address the challenges plaguing Ghana’s power sector and not cosmetic shows. Read his full text below.

The visionary John Mahama, in solving the generational deficit in the power sector, brought the Ameri Power plant to provide 250MW of electricity. However, the NPP criticized this deal vehemently, resorting to dubious means to renegotiate it and inflate its cost. Fortunately, the vigilance of the minority in Parliament exposed them resulting in the resignation of the then energy Minister Boakye Agyarko. As the Asante saying goes, “if you can’t give anything to your mother-in-law, you shouldn’t steal from her.” Despite not adding any megawatts to our power generation capacity, the NPP seeks to rename the Ameri project, resorting to pomp and pangentry. This is indeed shameful. The NPP’s mismanagement of the robust power sector handed to them by HE John Mahama has resulted in a resurgence of Dumsor, a problem previously eradicated by John Mahama in 2016. Of utmost concern is the exorbitant cost of the relocation, valued at $36 million. This must be thoroughly investigated. The NPP has failed to undertake any significant projects in the Ashanti region, so they attempt to create an illusion by renaming the relocated power plant. However, Ghanaians, especially those in the Ashanti Region, are not fooled by such antics. It is imperative to address the financial issues plaguing the power sector effectively. The NPP is inept of ideas.
